Book review - Spinning Starlight

"If you found a portal high, if you found a portal low, where in the Eight Points would you go?"

Publisher's summary: Sixteen-year-old heiress and paparazzi darling Liddi Jantzen hates the spotlight. But as the only daughter in the most powerful tech family in the galaxy, it's hard to escape it. So when a group of men shows up at her house uninvited, she assumes it's just the usual media-grubs. That is, until shots are fired.
Liddi escapes, only to be pulled into an interplanetary conspiracy more complex than she ever could have imagined. Her older brothers have been caught as well, trapped in the conduits between the planets. And when their captor implants a device in Liddi's vocal cords to monitor her speech, their lives are in her hands: One word, and her brothers are dead.
Desperate to save her family from a desolate future, Liddi travels to another world, where she meets the one person who might have the skills to help her bring her eight brothers home-a handsome dignitary named Tiav. But without her voice, Liddi must use every bit of her strength and wit to convince Tiav that her mission is true. With the tenuous balance of the planets deeply intertwined with her brothers' survival, just how much is Liddi willing to sacrifice to bring them back? Haunting and mesmerizing, this retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's The Wild Swans fuses all the heart of the classic tale with a stunning, imaginative world in which a star-crossed family fights for its very survival.

WOW. That should be the end of this review because it sums up my feelings after finishing this book. It starts off a bit slow but then it becomes so fast paced that one can simply not put this book down. Liddi is not the stereotypical heroine. She proves to be strong, but she also doubts herself at lots of points in the story, just like a normal person would. The description of the Eight Points is not immensely detailed, but just enough to give us an idea of the galaxy they live in. Sampati and Ferrine are more detailed because they are the two planets the plot mostly associates with. Let's talk about the plot. OMG so many twists and turns, it's fabulous. There were many times when i had to stop reading and just think about what just happened in the story because it was so mind-blasting. When i finished the book, I sat back and just stared at the story because it was so mesmerizing. This is one of the stories that will hook you in and never let you go, my favorite kind of story. Also the YA and Sci-fi book market has been dominated by series lately and this book is a standalone book which is something that one can read when they are looking for a great book but are not looking to make a commitment with a series.

This book comes out on Oct the 6th, 2015 and I think that it should be on everyone's to-read list.

Rating: 5/5
